Savannah, Georgia faces dual challenges: evolving drug smuggling tactics, including liquid forms, and a growing homelessness crisis impacting public safety and the business community. City and chamber leaders are seeking solutions to these issues.

Evolving Drug Smuggling Tactics

” Medication smugglers are difficult. They’re not going without a battle. We’ve seen a rise in methods to conceal and camouflage the lots of drugs with cover lots, transporting some of the medications in a fluid kind and other creative manners to avoid apprehension,” Mayer informed News4Jax.

“I do not think there’s a single person on this council that thinks we need to criminalize homelessness,” Alderman Kurtis Purtee told WJCL at the time. “Yet we need to find out a method to begin collaborating as a neighborhood, while holding individuals responsible for their activities.”

Being homeless remains a top worry for chamber participants. Ahead of Savannah-Chatham Day in February 2026, Brantley called it “such an essential problem,” while Mayor Van Johnson said city leaders are going after state-backed services to deal with recurring obstacles, according to WJCL.

While the teams pushed back on some insurance coverage as “designed to generate clicks by sensationalizing problems,” they recognized the troubles are genuine and increasingly visible to citizens, company owner and travelers.

City Leaders and Business Community Respond

Business leaders and city authorities in Savannah, Georgia– frequently called among America’s the majority of picturesque destinations, known for its Spanish moss-draped oaks, beachfront views and ornate ironwork– claim they are working to recover parts of the historical city from expanding homelessness, encampments and public security issues.
